Trek through Oman's most breathtaking wadi gorge. Swim through turquoise pools to a hidden waterfall cave. Then cool off at the famous Bimmah Sinkhole. One full day — memories for a lifetime.
A perfectly paced day — enough time to fully experience both sites without rushing.
Your driver arrives at your hotel lobby at 7:00 AM. Cold water and refreshments are already in the vehicle. We begin the drive south along Oman's stunning coastal highway.
After a scenic 2-hour coastal drive, we arrive at the Wadi Shab car park. Your driver explains the route ahead and what to expect inside the wadi. A short boat crossing (OMR 0.5) takes you across to the trail entrance.
The main trek follows the wadi floor between towering canyon walls, passing through date palm groves and alongside a series of increasingly spectacular turquoise pools. The water deepens as you progress, and the final section requires swimming to reach the hidden cave with its waterfall inside — the undisputed highlight of the entire experience.
Return through the gorge at your own pace. Your driver meets you at the boat crossing with Omani tea and cold refreshments. Lunch can be arranged at a local restaurant nearby — your driver knows the best spots.
A 20-minute drive brings you to Hawiyat Najm Park, home to the famous Bimmah Sinkhole. This remarkable geological feature — a collapsed limestone cave filled with crystalline blue-green water — is one of Oman's most photographed natural wonders. Swimming is allowed and the water is refreshing after a morning of trekking.
We begin the return journey north along the coast. Your driver drops you back at your Muscat hotel, usually arriving between 5:30 and 6:30 PM depending on traffic. Traditional Omani tea is served on the return drive.
To reach the hidden cave — the main highlight — you must swim through a series of deep pools. The distance is approximately 50 metres. Life jackets can be hired at the wadi entrance if needed.
The rocks inside Wadi Shab are slippery and irregular. Water shoes or sandals with a strong grip are strongly recommended. Flip flops are not suitable for this terrain.
October to April is ideal — comfortable temperatures for trekking and swimming. Summer months (June to September) are very hot but the wadi is still accessible. The wadi may close after heavy rain.
Oman is a conservative country. Swimwear is acceptable inside the wadi and at Bimmah Sinkhole. Outside the water, please cover up respectfully as a courtesy to local culture.
Bring a waterproof case or dry bag for your phone and valuables. The pools can be deep and sudden slips are possible on the rocks.
The full Wadi Shab experience — boat, trek, cave, return — takes 3 to 4 hours. Do not rush. The beauty of Wadi Shab rewards those who take their time.
There are dozens of wadis — the Arabic word for a dry or seasonal riverbed — scattered across the Sultanate of Oman. But Wadi Shab stands apart. The name itself translates loosely as "gorge between cliffs" and the landscape lives up entirely to that description: sheer canyon walls rising 200 metres on either side, the floor filled with a sequence of pools ranging from ankle-deep to well over your head, the water so clear and so turquoise it looks artificially coloured.
What makes Wadi Shab genuinely special among the world's great natural landscapes is not just its beauty but its final secret. After 45 minutes of walking and wading through increasingly deep pools, the gorge narrows to a point where you must swim. Around a corner, tucked against the canyon wall, is a waterfall cascading into a cave. You swim through the cave entrance and emerge inside — surrounded by water, stone, light and sound. It is one of those rare travel experiences that exceeds every expectation and photograph.
Bimmah Sinkhole, which we combine with Wadi Shab in a single day tour, tells a different geological story. Known locally as Hawiyat Najm — meaning "falling star" — the sinkhole was formed when an underground limestone cave collapsed, revealing a pool of blue-green water connected to the sea beneath. Local legend says a meteor created it. Geologists say otherwise. Either way, it is strikingly beautiful and perfectly suited for a refreshing swim after the morning's exertions.
The drive from Muscat to Wadi Shab follows the Al Batinah Coastal Road and then the coastal highway south — approximately 150 kilometres of road with the Gulf of Oman on one side and Oman's mountains rising inland on the other. Your Oman Taxi Pro driver knows every kilometre of this route and can point out landmarks, fishing villages and scenic viewpoints along the way.
Essential. Wear it under your clothes for easy changing at the wadi entrance.
Non-negotiable for safety on slippery rocks. Available to buy in Muscat.
For your phone, wallet and passport during the swimming sections.
Apply before entering the water. Protect both your skin and the wadi ecosystem.
A lightweight microfibre towel is ideal and takes up almost no space.
We provide cold water and refreshments — but extra snacks for the trek are always welcome.
The easiest way is a private taxi tour from Muscat. The drive takes approximately 2 hours south along the coastal highway. Oman Taxi Pro provides door-to-door service from your Muscat hotel, including the return journey.
The trek takes approximately 3 to 4 hours round trip — including the walking sections, swimming pools, visit to the hidden cave, and the return journey back through the gorge.
Wadi Shab is suitable for children who are comfortable swimming. The early sections are shallow enough to walk. Life jackets are available at the entrance. Children under 10 should be assessed individually based on swimming ability.
The price includes your private AC vehicle, experienced English-speaking driver, cold water, refreshments and traditional Omani tea throughout the day. The price is per vehicle, not per person — making it excellent value for families and groups.
Yes. We combine Wadi Shab with Bimmah Sinkhole as a standard full-day tour. We can also combine Wadi Shab with Sur and Ras Al Jinz turtle beach as a longer coastal day — ask us on WhatsApp.
