Muscat Intercity Taxi Prices 2026: Sohar, Nizwa, Sur, Salalah & All Routes

All routes from OMR 45. Fixed price. Driver waits. Confirmed in 15 minutes.

Oman is a country where the most interesting things are not in Muscat. Nizwa’s ancient fort. Sohar’s industrial port. Sur’s dhow builders. Salalah’s monsoon mountains. The problem: Oman has no train network, limited intercity buses, and hiring a car in an unfamiliar country adds logistics most visitors want to avoid.

A private intercity taxi — fixed price, direct route, driver who knows the destination — is how most people move between Oman’s cities.

This guide gives you every route, every real price for 2026, and what to expect on each journey.

Route by Route: What You Need to Know

Muscat to Nizwa — OMR 45–55

Distance: 165 km · Time: 1h 45min · Highway: Route 15

The most popular intercity route in Oman. Muscat to Nizwa on a modern dual carriageway through the Al Hajar mountain foothills — one of the most scenic drives in the country.

What’s in Nizwa:

  • Nizwa Fort — Oman’s greatest historic fort. OMR 5 entry.
  • Nizwa Souq — Friday livestock market since the 7th century.
  • Gateway to Jebel Akhdar (30km further, 4WD required).
  • Important: If your plan includes Jebel Akhdar after Nizwa, book a full-day driver rather than a one-way drop. A checkpoint at the mountain base requires 4WD — your driver provides this automatically for a day booking.

Best departure time: Before 7 AM to arrive at Nizwa Fort before the tour groups.

Muscat to Sohar — OMR 55–65

    Distance: 205 km · Time: 2h 00min · Highway: Al Batinah Expressway (Route 1)

Sohar is Oman’s primary industrial city — home to one of the largest integrated industrial ports in the Gulf. Most passengers on this route are business travelers and industrial professionals.

    What’s in Sohar:

  • Sohar Industrial Port (aluminium, steel, chemicals, fertilisers)
  • Sohar University
  • Sohar Fort (historical)
  • Sohar Beach Hotel and Al Wadi Hotel (main business hotels)
  • Industrial zone delivery: Your driver knows the specific gate locations within Sohar Industrial Port — important for first-time visitors who may not know which entrance their facility uses.

Hindi-speaking drivers available — relevant for Sohar’s large Indian professional community.

Muscat to Sur — OMR 80–95

    Distance: 300 km · Time: 3h 00min · Highway: Coastal Route 17

Sur is Oman’s traditional dhow-building port — wooden boats hand-built exactly as they were 500 years ago. The route south passes through the same coastal limestone scenery as the Wadi Shab and Bimmah area.

    What’s in Sur:

  • Al Ayjah Dhow Building Yard — last working traditional yard in Oman
  • Sur Lagoon and Corniche
  • Ras Al Hadd lighthouse
  • Ras Al Jinz — world’s most important green turtle nesting beach (40km from Sur)
  • Combined with Wadi Shab: Many visitors combine Sur with a Wadi Shab stop en route. This adds 2 hours to the journey. Discuss at booking.

Muscat to Khasab (Musandam) — OMR 95–120

    Distance: 380 km · Time: 4h 30min

Khasab is the capital of the Musandam Peninsula — Oman’s geographical exclave separated from the mainland by UAE territory. The route passes through the UAE (Ras Al Khaimah emirate) and requires crossing two borders.

Border crossings: UAE entry (Tibat border) and UAE exit (Tibat border) within 30–40 minutes of each other. Your driver handles all vehicle documentation for both crossings.

    What’s in Khasab:

  • Khasab Fort
  • Dhow cruises through the dramatic Musandam fjords
  • Dolphin watching in the Strait of Hormuz
  • Visa note: GCC nationals and UAE residents enter Musandam freely. Other nationalities check visa requirements for UAE transit — your driver will advise.

Muscat to Salalah — OMR 200–250

    Distance: 1,040 km · Time: 9–11 hours

Oman’s longest intercity route — a full-day overland journey from the capital to the southern province of Dhofar. Most travelers fly (45 minutes), but the overland route passes through dramatic desert, the Empty Quarter edges, and the Dhofar Mountains approach.

    When it makes sense:

  • Travelers who specifically want the overland experience
  • Groups where the flight cost exceeds the taxi cost
  • Travelers with significant luggage who prefer door-to-door

Overnight option: Some travelers do this route with an overnight stop in Haima (midpoint) — discuss with your driver at booking.

Khareef season (June–September): Salalah receives the Indian Ocean monsoon — waterfalls, green mountains, cool temperatures. The most popular time for this route.

Muscat to Rustaq — OMR 48–58

Distance: 170 km · Time: 2h 00min

Often combined with Nakhal Fort and Ain Al Thawwarah hot springs in a single day loop from Muscat. Rustaq Fort is one of Oman’s largest — multiple towers, a falconry museum, and far fewer visitors than Nizwa.

Al Batinah loop: Muscat → Nakhal → Rustaq → Al Batinah coast → Muscat makes an excellent full-day circuit. Book as a day rate rather than intercity drops.

One-Way Drop vs Full-Day Driver: When to Choose Which

This is the decision most first-time visitors get wrong.

SituationBest OptionReason
Flying into Muscat, going to Nizwa, flying outOne-way drop + return taxiTwo separate journeys
Day trip from Muscat to Nizwa and backFull-day driverCheaper + driver waits all day
Relocating to Sohar permanentlyOne-way dropNo need for return
Muscat → Sur including Wadi Shab stopFull-day driverMultiple stops + waiting
Business meeting in Sohar, same-day returnFull-day driverWaiting included

Rule: If you are returning to your starting point the same day, a full-day driver rate is almost always cheaper than two one-way transfers.

Ahmed R., UAE resident — “Muscat to Khasab — had no idea about the UAE border crossing in between. Driver handled everything. Arrived in Khasab with zero stress.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest intercity taxi from Muscat?

Are intercity taxi prices per person or per vehicle?

Per vehicle. 1 passenger or 4 passengers pay the same price for the same vehicle. For groups, this makes private intercity taxi significantly cheaper per person than per-head alternatives.

Can I book a return trip at the same time?

Yes. Book both directions together — we confirm driver, vehicle, and return time at the same booking.

How long does Muscat to Salalah take by taxi?

Is waiting time included in intercity prices?

For one-way drops: the driver drops you and departs. For day bookings (round trip same day): waiting time at your destination is fully included.

Can the driver collect from Muscat International Airport for an intercity trip?

Yes. Your driver meets you at MCT arrivals and drives directly to your intercity destination — Nizwa, Sohar, or anywhere else in Oman.
